
Joint Press Conference: Human Rights and Democracy in Cambodia ahead 2022 polls
The Asian Network for Free Elections (ANFREL) will hold a joint press conference with the ASEAN Parliamentarians for Human Rights, Human Rights Watch and the International Commission of Jurists this Friday, 6 May 2022, about the human rights and democracy situation in Cambodia ahead of the Commune and Sangkat Council Elections.
Cambodia is set to hold its elections on 5 June 2022 with significant concerns raised about the elections including accusations of harassment and intimidation of opposition candidates and that the National Election Commission is biased towards the CPP.
The following speakers will shed light on the issues and challenges that the Cambodian electorate are facing ahead of the scheduled polls:
• Lee Chung Lun, ANFREL program officer for campaign and advocacy.
• Phil Robertson, Human Rights Watch deputy director of Asia division.
• Kasit Piromya, APHR board member and former foreign minister of Thailand.
• Sanhawan Srisod, International Commission of Jurists, Asia Pacific Programme Legal Adviser
