This issue of Data Dive is based on ANFREL’s recently released Final Comprehensive Mission Report on Nepal’s 2026 House of Representatives Elections, titled Rebuilding Trust, Restoring Credibility: Accountability and Electoral Integrity in Nepal 2026. The report was launched during ANFREL’s Post-Election Discussion with Electoral Stakeholders in Kathmandu on 13 May 2026.

Nepal’s 5 March 2026 elections were held after the 2025 youth-led uprising, which reflected deep public frustration over governance, transparency, and political accountability. In this context, the elections became more than a constitutional exercise. They were a critical opportunity to rebuild public trust, restore institutional credibility, and reaffirm democratic legitimacy.

This issue of Data Dive builds on earlier editions that covered key developments in Nepal’s 2026 electoral cycle. Issue No. 23 examined the Gen Z-led political unrest and its implications for Nepal’s democratic landscape, while Issue No. 28 provided an Election Day special as Nepal went to the polls. With the release of ANFREL’s Final Comprehensive Mission Report, this edition offers a consolidated view of the electoral process and highlights priority reforms needed to strengthen accountability, inclusion, transparency, and electoral integrity.

Conclusion: From Assessment to Reform

Nepal’s 2026 House of Representatives elections demonstrated democratic resilience at a moment of political uncertainty. The largely peaceful conduct of Election Day, the ECN’s ability to deliver the elections within a compressed timeline, and continued public participation were important achievements. At the same time, ANFREL’s assessment highlights that credible elections require more than technical administration. Stronger Code of Conduct enforcement, transparent campaign finance, inclusive participation, accessible voter education, protection of information integrity, clear observer access, and meaningful post-election accountability remain essential to rebuilding public trust and strengthening electoral integrity.

The significance of Nepal’s 2026 elections also extends beyond its national context. Across Asia, elections are increasingly shaped by public distrust, youth-led demands for accountability, digital campaigning, disinformation, money politics, and pressure on democratic institutions. Nepal’s experience shows that elections held after a political crisis can help restore constitutional order, but only if they are followed by credible reform. For the region, the key lesson is clear: democratic legitimacy is not secured on Election Day alone; it must be sustained through transparent institutions, inclusive participation, accountable political actors, and continuous engagement between electoral cycles. ###
