Election Day Special: Nepal Votes Today! | Data Dive Issue No. 28
Overview
Today, 5 March 2026, Nepalis head to the polls to elect a new House of Representatives, in what is widely regarded as one of the most consequential elections in the country’s recent democratic history.
These snap elections were called following the September 2025 political upheaval, which led to the resignation of the government, dissolution of parliament, and the installation of a six-month interim administration. As explored in Data Dive Issue 23, the youth-led unrest marked a rupture between citizens and the political establishment. Today’s vote represents the first institutional response to that rupture.
This election is not simply a routine parliamentary contest. It is a credibility test for Nepal’s democratic institutions. With high political stakes, heightened public scrutiny, and strong youth engagement, today’s election is a defining moment for Nepal’s evolving democratic trajectory.
