ANFREL Returns to Sri Lanka in Support of the August 17th Parliamentary Elections

COLOMBO, 07 August  On August 6th, the Asian Network for Free Elections (ANFREL) deployed a team of election observers from countries across Asia and beyond to observe the August 17th Parliamentary Elections in Sri Lanka. This is ANFREL’s 7th Election Observation Mission to Sri Lanka.

ANFREL’s mission in Sri Lanka is in cooperation with the Peoples’ Action for Free & Fair Elections (PAFFREL), Sri Lanka’s leading Citizen Election Monitoring Organization. In total, ANFREL will have a team of 16 international election observers on Sri Lanka’s Election Day that will be deployed in pairs to observe in every province across the country. ANFREL will stay through the Election until the 20th of August to monitor and report on the immediate post-election environment.

ANFREL’s observers come from 12 countries and are experienced in the field of election observation and human rights. They hope to observe a genuine electoral process free from irregularities and fraud that will bring about a representative government that reflects the true will of the people. ANFREL believes that the presence of international observers can help to make the entire process more transparent and accessible to the public and looks forward to continued fruitful engagement with the Election Department of Sri Lanka, Sri Lankan Civil Society Organizations, other election stakeholders, and most especially the people of Sri Lanka.
