ANFREL organizes training workshop for Thai CSOs on pushing for electoral reforms

The Asian Network for Free Elections (ANFREL) organized a two-day training workshop in Thailand about strengthening civil society collaboration towards building a comprehensive electoral reform strategy, 18-19 July 2024.

Various CSO representatives participated in a series of workshops to help identify priority electoral reform agenda in the country. They were able to discuss strategies and approaches as well as assess critical areas of concern when advocating for reforms.

ANFREL invited academics, CSO leaders and reformers from Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Sri Lanka and Thailand to share their experience in pushing for reforms in their home countries, presenting best practices that Thai CSOs can adopt in their advocacy work.

Law professor Bivitri Susanti shares the experience of Indonesia in campaigning for constitutional amendments that protect and guarantee human rights.
Assoc. Prof. Somchai Srisutthiyakorn shares the experience of the 2016 Thai Constitutional Referendum.
PAFFREL executive director Rohana Hettiarachchie shares the experience of Sri Lanka in pushing for the campaign finance law in the country.
Bersih senior manager Asraf Sharafi shares their experience in Malaysia from protesting in the streets to working with various institutions to push for reforms.

The training workshop builds on the public forum on electoral reforms in Thailand held in December 2023 and ANFREL’s commitment towards pushing for electoral reforms as manifested in the “Kathmandu Declaration on Strengthening Democracy and Promoting Electoral Reforms in Asia“.
