The Asian Network for Free Elections (ANFREL) continues to engage various stakeholders in Asia, especially in Sri Lanka and Myanmar, during the third quarter of 2020.
ANFREL released the report of its assessment of the 2020 Sri Lankan Parliamentary Election held on 5 August 2020 amid the COVID-19 pandemic. (The report can be accessed here: 2020 Sri Lanka Parliamentary Elections: Defending Democracy Amid the COVID-19 Pandemic)
Due to the travel restrictions in place to curb the further spread of the new coronavirus, ANFREL was not able to mount a full-fledged international election observation mission for the Sri Lankan polls. ANFREL instead employed a modified approach deploying expats already in the country as election volunteers and a remote team of election experts.
ANFREL has also been conducting capacity building efforts for the media and civil society organizations in Myanmar as well as voter education campaigns in the lead up to the upcoming Myanmar General Elections on 8 November 2020.
ANFREL is planning to deploy election observers for the election. (Visit the website of ANFREL Myanmar Program to know more about the activities and other updates on our engagement in the country.)
