ANFREL #LetMeExplain series points key democratic indicators where Myanmar junta-planned elections fall short
Following the assessment report on the Myanmar junta’s planned elections, the Asian Network for Free Elections (ANFREL) launched a mini video series explaining why the junta-planned elections cannot be considered legitimate, credible, and free and fair.
The #LetMeExplain series focused on three key aspects of the electoral environment that strongly indicate how the planned elections fall short of democratic legitimacy: 1) lack of legal leg to stand on, 2) violations of fundamental rights and freedom, and 3) absence of genuine transparency and independent oversight.
Along with other independent, professional election observation mission, ANFREL has expressed that it will not seek accreditation and deploy international observers and called on the international community to collectively refuse lending legitimacy to a process designed to entrench military rule and instead enjoined everyone to intensify support for the democratic aspirations of the Myanmar people.
