ANFREL launches expert mission to observe 2024 Indonesian polls

The Asian Network for Free Elections (ANFREL) launched today, 7 February 2024, its international expert election observation mission to the 2024 Indonesian General Election deploying three electoral analysts and seven short-term observers across the country.

Indonesia is heading to the polls on 14 February 2024 to elect a president, vice president, members of the People's Representative Council (DPR), members of the Regional Representative Council (DPD), and members of the Regional People's Representative Council (DPRD). ANFREL believes that the 2024 General Elections in Indonesia will be a crucial juncture in the country's democratic consolidation, given the distinctive challenges encountered in the electoral process.

The ANFREL election observers will be monitoring election-related activities including electoral campaigns, Election Day voting and counting proceedings, and post-election scenario as well as engage with various electoral stakeholders during the course of their deployment.

The election observers were briefed on 6 February 2024 about Indonesia’s electoral landscape, electoral issues, and observation methodology. They will be deployed in the field for 10 days. Prior to the mission launch, the electoral analysts have been conducting online interviews and in-person meetings with various electoral stakeholders.

The expert mission aims to observe and assess the electoral process in the country and promote international electoral standards and norms to ensure electoral integrity towards a free, fair and democratic election.

ANFREL's observation and assessment of the elections follows the methodology guided by the Declaration of Principles and Code of Conduct for International Election Observation, as well as the Bangkok Declaration for Free and Fair Elections and the Dili Indicators of Democratic Elections.

ANFREL will release and present its interim report in a press conference in Jakarta on 18 February 2024. The comprehensive final report will be published by the end of March.
