ANFREL hosts webinar on Sri Lankan polls

The Asian Network for Free Elections (ANFREL) is hosting a webinar on the preparations, challenges of organizing and participating in the upcoming 2020 Sri Lankan Parliamentary Election, this Saturday, 27 June 2020 at 10 a.m. (Colombo Time/11:30 a.m. Bangkok Time).

The election was first set for 25 April 2020 but was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. It was rescheduled for 20 June 2020 but was challenged in court by several groups. The Supreme Court of Sri Lanka ruled against petitions challenging the dissolution of parliament and the conduct of the election.

The people of Sri Lanka will head to the polls on 5 August 2020 still amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

While preparations for the election are currently underway, ANFREL wishes to provide election stakeholders through this webinar an update of the current situation and overview of the challenges they may encounter during the election period.

ANFREL invited Election Commission Chairperson Mahinda Deshapriya, Centre for Monitoring Election Violence (CMEV) National Coordinator Majula Ganjanayake, and Ms. Deepanjalie Abeywardana, Head - Media Research of Verite Research as panelists.

ANFREL is inviting everyone to participate in the webinar via online meeting platform Zoom. Interested individuals can register here to join: https://bit.ly/3i2wUx6. ANFREL will also be streaming the webinar live on our Facebook page (https://web.facebook.com/ANFREL).
