AAEI fellows conduct training workshop on campaign finance regulation in Sri Lanka

Fellows of the Asian Academy for Electoral Integrity (AAEI) co-facilitated a training workshop on the implementation of the Regulation of Election Expenditure Act in Sri Lanka, 31 May 2024, Colombo.

AAEI fellow Sakunthala Senarath from Transparency International Sri Lanka (TI SL) provided a comprehensive breakdown of the Regulation of Election Expenditure Act and the role of the Election Commission in its implementation.

National Democratic Institute senior advisor on election and political processes Julia Brothers, who joined online, presented international best practices in campaign finance regulation and innovations and challenges in campaign finance monitoring. 

AAEI fellow Anuruddha Bandara from Centre for Monitoring Election Violence (CMEV) presented a case study from the Philippines on campaign finance regulation and the challenges related to social media campaign spending.

Meanwhile, AAEI fellow S. Sathyaraj from People's Action for Free and Fair Elections (PAFFREL) co-facilitated a brainstorming session on the implementation plan and guideline for the Regulation of Election Expenditure Act.

Election Commission (EC) of Sri Lanka commissioner general of elections Saman Sri Rathnayake shared the current initiatives and preparations undertaken by EC to implement the Regulation of Election Expenditure Act.

The learning session in Colombo builds on the inaugural AAEI where the fellows were given the opportunity to propose a focused cascade session within their organizations. AAEI fellow Alexa Yadao of the Legal Network for Truthful Elections in the Philippines co-facilitated a session on process and results verification for transparency (PRVT) and open election data on 15 May 2024.

AAEI is a program which aims to advance election observation and monitoring and further push for the enhancement of electoral democracy in Asia by cultivating the young and dedicated individuals.
