16 young, emerging election observers complete 1st Asian Academy for Electoral Integrity program

Sixteen young and emerging election observers and democracy advocates from 10 countries in Asia completed the first Asian Academy for Electoral Integrity program held in Kathmandu, Nepal from 9-13 December 2023.

The Asian Network for Free Elections (ANFREL), through the support from the National Democratic Institute (NDI), facilitated the intensive peer-to-peer learning program which enhanced the fellows’ understanding of democratic processes, educated them about the different types of electoral systems and recurring electoral integrity issues, and foster respectful and constructive election integrity discourse and engagement.

Sixteen fellows successfully completed the first Asian Academy for Electoral Integrity program.

The five-day program facilitated interactive activities, group exercises, lightning talks and hands-on exercises on the legal framework and electoral system, independence of election management bodies (EMBs), persistent issues on transparency and inclusiveness of election, open election data, campaign finance and abuse of state resources during elections, disinformation, election observation innovations and practical approaches on how to pursue electoral reforms.

The fellows also got the opportunity to participate in the sixth Asian Electoral Stakeholder Forum (AESF-VI) on 6-7 December 2023 where electoral issues and challenges were discussed and insights and lessons on overcoming those issues and challenges were shared.

ANFREL and NDI hope that the fellows would carry back to their organizations the lessons learned and insights gained from the program to advance election observation and monitoring and to further push for the enhancement of electoral democracy in Asia.
